Staves are tools to which the research, excepting for one, is found under the Thaumaturgy tab. Staff Cores, which when paired with Caps, as one would with a Wand, can be used to create a Staves. Staves can hold 1.5 times as much Vis as their wand based counterparts, accrue a 10% Vis discount to Wand Foci, and even deal as much damage as an iron sword without taking any damage. However, they can not be used in Arcane Crafting, but can be used to activate an Infusion Altar or to create mutliblock structures. All Staff Cores are made of two rods of the desired type paired with a Primal Charm, put diagonally across an Arcane Crafting Table. This, once again, excepts only one Staff Core, the Staff Core of the Primal, to which a link can be found below. One must still add Caps to a Staff Core to create a Staff.
Magic Staves is a research option under the Thaumaturgy tab that allows for the creation of Staves, or, in this case, the Greatwood Staff Core. This is the first Staff available to a Thaumaturge, and leads into research on the Silverwood Staff Core, the Elemental Staff Cores, after researching Elemental Wand Cores, and the Staff Core of the Primal. Although more limited in Vis storage, the Greatwood Staff core offers all of the benefits of a normal staff equally as well of one of greater quality. It is created with two Greatwood Rods placed diagonally across an Arcane Workbench, topped with a Primal Charm, and infused with 64 Ordo Vis. The research becomes available after researching the Silverwood Wand Core.
Types of Staves
There are several different Staff Cores, those being:
- Greatwood Staff Core (Shown above)
- Silverwood Staff Core
- Reed Staff Core
- Blazing Staff Core
- Obsidian Staff Core
- Icy Staff Core
- Quartz Staff Core
- Bone Staff Core
- Staff Core of the Primal
Caps are added to Staves to channel the Vis into and out of the Staff Core. The material used for the Cap affects how quickly the Staff is charged and how much Vis is actually used in actions.
